When someone goes on a trip…
The other day, shortly before vacation, I decided to get our shoes ready for vacation. Above all, the hiking boots should be cleaned and well impregnated, but my new leather boots also needed good protection for their future use.
Especially since it is supposed to be quite often humid and rainy in Scotland. The small children’s shoes also needed basic cleaning and good impregnation. So there is always enough to do.
So – used a sunny afternoon shortly before departure at home, took out the shoe shine box and off we went.
What do I need for my project?
Since this time we are talking about different types of shoes and materials, different products are needed. Of course, you don’t need every product for every material.
- the outdoors on the road! Wetness protection
- a bucket of warm water
- a stiff brush
- the Sneaker Cleaner
- the Sneaker Protector
- an application brush
- if necessary. an empty bowl
- Leather grease
- a clean cotton cloth
Naturally well-groomed on tour
First it was the turn of the hiking boots. Since they are made of a functional fabric, the new sneaker cleaner is also ideal for this. Cleaning is very simple: first the laces had to be removed in order to reach the harder-to-reach places. Then simply spray on the white foam with the pleasant scent a few times and work it well into the shoe with the enclosed dirt brush. The foam now works deep down and dissolves even deep-seated dirt from the inside out. In between, it was necessary to brush off the dirty foam with the help of clear water and the dirt brush and, if necessary – depending on the degree of soiling – to use new foam. In this case, however, this was not necessary.
To protect the hiking boots from further dirt and moisture penetration in the future, good impregnation is essential. In this case, I opted for the Out and about! Wetness protection decided. This is suitable for various types of shoes and materials – including hiking boots made of leather, fabric and functional fabric. Simply apply to the shoe with the enclosed application brush and let it dry. The shoes are then optimally equipped for further excursions.
Natural care for smooth leather boots
Next up were my new leather boots. I’ve never worn them before, so I didn’t have to clean the boots. Impregnation is of course still necessary.
Tapir tip: New shoes should always be impregnated before wearing them for the first time to protect them from moisture and stains. Whether made of leather, fabric or functional fabric!
I chose Tapirs leather grease for my boots, as it is ideal for heavily used leather and also offers ideal protection against moisture. For a longer stay in a generally humid country like Scotland with a lot of time outside, especially with children – where you will often walk over muddy paths or meadows, so optimal.
The leather grease nourishes and cares for the leather in depth and offers optimal protection from becoming wet. It also has a water-repellent moisturizing effect. In addition, it is consistently ecological and consists only of natural raw materials.
Tapir tip: Leather grease or leather oil? The former is more deep care and the latter maintenance care. If your piece is old, brittle and dried leather, it is better to treat it with leather oil instead of leather grease. With new leather, it doesn’t really matter what you choose. However, you should know that leather grease should not be used too often, as it always makes the leather softer!
So now my boots were well prepared for the next mission.
Cleaning and impregnation of children’s shoes
Last up were my daughter’s green lace-up shoes made of smooth leather and suede. Tapir’s new sneaker series, consisting of Sneaker Cleaner, Protector and Refresher, is ideal for this.
The shoes were already adorned with a clearly noticeable film of dirt (no wonder – after countless playground visits and puddle tests) and the last impregnation was some time ago. So we started by removing the shoelaces.
Tapir tip: Once these are clean, it is best to simply place the laces in the shoe while cleaning the shoe. So they don’t get lost. However, if the shoelaces are also dirty, it is advisable to add them to the bowl with the washing water. In this way, they are cleaned directly at the same time.
So we started with the cleaning. About 2-3 sprays of the sneaker cleaner were enough for this. The foam now had to be worked into the shoe surface with the dirt brush. As with hiking boots, it works deep down and loosens the dirt from the inside out. After each brushing with the dirt brush and the addition of clean fresh water, you could see directly how the shoe became cleaner and cleaner. If necessary, new foam can also be sprayed on.
After cleaning, of course, it was the turn of the impregnation. For this purpose, the Sneaker Protector can be sprayed onto the still damp shoe. Make sure to spray evenly and then spread the impregnation over the shoes with the enclosed sponge. The Protector is suitable for all sneaker materials – whether smooth leather, textiles, nubuck or imitation leather.
Due to the natural raw materials it contains, an invisible, breathable barrier against moisture and dirt is formed. Water droplets now simply roll off like a plant leaf, without impairing the natural breathability of the material. At the same time, the material is cared for by its valuable oils and ensures smooth surfaces.
And that’s it. A total of four pairs of shoes were cleaned, cared for and impregnated with minimal effort and purely natural materials. So it wasn’t bad at all that my daughter took my freshly treated boots in her arms. “Mmmmh, they smell good!” Fortunately, all products contain no harmful substances and no dangerous chemicals.
Shoe care can therefore also be beautiful, simple and, above all, natural. So off to your holiday now!
