Refurbishment of an old gym box

This time we have taken on a discarded old gym box. It is guaranteed that it has not even been cleaned or maintained during its long time in physical education.
Pictures say more than words – and the before picture speaks volumes. The leather is severely dried, scratched and partly cracked. In addition, the wood of the box is dirty and also has a number of scratches.

For leather and wood treatment, we need the following things:

The Tapir Leather and Saddle Soap
a bucket of warm water
a swelling sponge
the outdoors on the road! Cleaner
a cotton cloth
Furniture polishing
Leather grease
an application brush
a gloss brush.

Declare war with leather and saddle soap dirt

First of all, we take care of the claimed smooth leather. To do this, we pick up some of the leather and saddle soap with the damp swelling sponge with circular movements and crumple it until a fine foam is formed.
Tapir tip: The leather and saddle soap is ideal for cleaning leather, as it dissolves deep-seated dirt on the one hand and nourishes and cares for the leather directly on the other hand, as it is greasy. However, this is only suitable for smooth leather and not for suede!

With the sponge, the soap is now applied to the leather surface over a large area in circular movements.

Don’t skimp on soap and take more often! The dark discoloration of the leather makes it easy to see where the soap has already been applied.

Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the result and there is no more dirt on the sponge. For the time being, when the foam is finally completely clean, it doesn’t even have to be removed, as it cares for the leather directly while we take care of the wood.

Natural wood care

For this we need a damp sponge again and the outdoors on the road! Cleaner. We pick up a little of the cleaner on the sponge and crumple it until we have enough foam. We now rub the wood with this with circular movements. When all the wood has been massaged in with the cleaner, we rub off the excess foam with a clean cotton cloth.
Now we need the natural Köndringer furniture polish. First it must be shaken well, then applied evenly to the wood with the help of a cotton cloth and massaged in.

Tiefenpflege für das Leder

Die restliche Seife auf dem Leder hatte in der Zwischenzeit noch ausreichend Zeit, um einzuwirken. Nun bürsten wir diese mit der Glanzbürste in kreisenden Bewegungen ein, was die pflegende Wirkung erneut verstärkt und zu einer schönen glänzenden Oberfläche führt.
Zu guter Letzt fehlt nur noch eine reichhaltige Tiefenpflege für das Leder. In diesem Falle hat Hubert sich für das Lederfett entschieden, da Lederöl eher Erhaltungspflege ist. Das Fett wird mit der kleinen Auftragsbürste aufgenommen und sehr üppig mit kreisenden Bewegungen auf die Lederoberfläche aufgetragen. Das Leder darf ruhig schön glänzen. Damit es ausreichend Zeit hat, einzuziehen, sollte der Turnkasten nun mindestens 24 Stunden stehen gelassen werden. Sollte die Oberfläche nach Ablauf dieser Zeit immer noch fettig wirken, dann kann das überschüssige Fett mit einem trockenen Baumwolltuch abgenommen werden.
Bevor es nun Zeit zum einziehen bekommt, wird das Leder abschließend mit einer Glanzbürste abgebürstet. Dies hat einerseits den Vorteil, dass das Lederfett wirklich gleichmäßig verteilt wird und jede Stelle erreicht wird. Außerdem entsteht durch den Bürstvorgang Wärme, wodurch das Fett noch schöner ins Leder eindringen kann.
Der Kasten ist nun fertig gepflegt und man sieht direkt, wie sehr das Leder und Holz von der ausgiebigen Pflege profitiert haben!

Tapir-Tipp: Sobald das komplette Lederfett eingezogen ist (mindestens nach dem Ablauf der 24 Stunden), kann der Turnkasten auch wieder verwendet werden. Damit Sie aber auch wirklich sicher sein können, dass kein Fettüberschuss auf Ihrer Hose landet, sollten Sie zuerst einen kleinen Test mithilfe eines Baumwolltuchs machen. Wenn dort kein Fett mehr zu sehen ist, dann ist es komplett eingezogen und der Kasten kann wieder verwendet werden.
