PFAS to be banned in the EU

PFAS-free

Tapir has been producing high-quality care products for shoes, leather goods, fabrics and wooden furniture for 40 years now. The company relies on environmentally friendly production and the use of natural raw materials. All products have a full declaration, so customers know exactly what they are buying.

Unfortunately, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are still used in many care products, even though these substances are dangerous to both humans and the environment. PFAS are chemical compounds that are often used in moisture repellents, impregnations or cleaning agents due to their special chemical properties. PFAS can be found not only in water and air, but also in food and in the blood of humans and animals.

The danger of PFAS is based on the fact that they do not degrade in the environment and accumulate more and more. PFAS are suspected of being carcinogenic and affecting the endocrine system.

This makes it all the more important that the European Union has now decided to severely restrict PFAS. Tapir expressly supports this approach. Unfortunately, PFAS still do not currently need to be listed as ingredients on products, making it difficult for consumers to tell if these substances are present in a product.

At Tapir, however, customers can be sure that only natural and, if possible, ecologically certified raw materials are used. The natural recipes are not only more environmentally friendly, but often also more effective than conventional products. Tapir is consistently committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly production, proving that it can also be done without harmful chemicals.

Here are some reasons why PFAS are dangerous to the environment and to humans:

  1. PFAS are persistent and can accumulate in the environment. PFAS can remain in the environment for years and accumulate in soil, water and air. They can also enter food chains and accumulate in animals and humans, which can lead to toxicity and health problems.

  2. PFAS are toxic to humans and animals. Studies have shown that PFAS can have negative effects on reproduction, the immune system, and development. They can also cause liver damage and increase the risk of cancer and other diseases.

  3. PFAS can pollute drinking water resources. PFAS can be found in drinking water sources such as rivers, lakes, and groundwater, especially near sites where PFAS are produced or used. Exposure to PFAS can increase the risk of health problems.

Because of these concerns, many countries have already taken action to reduce or ban the use of PFAS. The planned ban on PFAS in the European Union is an important step towards protecting the environment and human and animal health.
